It is just into the end which begins to falter, nevertheless the slap-upwards finale rescues they on the ‘red’. Excellently staged and intelligently dialogued, it’ll have no high issue into the life off the very ugly label.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Movie Bulletin told you “The movie movements in the an instant speed, the brand new dialogue try slick and you may characterisations generally effective. The new film’s blogger and you can director, Robert Rossen, sets up a beneficial multidimensional chess video game, to possess mortal limits, anywhere between Johnny, their workplace (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s partner (Ellen Received), an effective cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and a scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sister (Nina Foch) worked within gambling enterprise and you will old an excellent corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The fresh caustically epigrammatic program, the cast’s suavely regulated body gestures away from like and danger, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you can smartly cocky photographs (also their governmental conscience) get this pugnacious but really detailed spectacle an invisible classic of your own category.” [ ten ]

Ace performances by the Cock Powell, because a gambling family overseer, and you can Lee J. Cobb, while the a police inspector, together with up the rating . Whilst the area observe a familiar pattern, the newest characterizations is new and performances good enough to overbalance. Dialog is terse and you will topical, preventing the emotional, phoney contact. Unusual camera angles appear now and then so you can heighten focus and you will temporarily arrest the interest. Good teamplay from the Robert Rossen, increasing just like the manager-scripter, and Milton Holmes, brand spanking new copywriter and you will member producer, in addition to supports making this a mellow design.” [ 11 ]

It is primarily a point of enjoying Mr. Powell undergo their paces fashionably while you are a massive shed from stars and you may actresses give your customary service. Evelyn Keyes plays the favorable little lady exactly who brings about brand new best in your and Ellen Received ‘s the smooth and slinky vixen who becomes him into the jams. Thomas Gomez is oily because villain and you may Lee J. Cobb does a separate in a position concert tour just like the a weary police inspector who ultimately shuts the case. Significant amounts of sipping and you will puffing is done from the every alarmed.” [ 12 ]
